These contacts and wires have been used extensively on Scalextric cars from 2003 to the present. These wires can be soldered to the motor tabs directly or joined to the existing pick-up wires.

These contacts are suitable for the Scalextric Start range of cars.

Guide blade upgrade kit for vintage Scalextric C74 and C75

This guide blade upgrade kit is a direct replacement for the original Scalextric G5 guide pin fitted to the cars listed below. The kit comes complete with:

• Guide blade G30
• Braids (fitted)

The original guide pin fitted to these Scalextric cars cannot readily be used on modern track with crossovers, points etc. as the pin is small and the car can change lanes when traversing a crossover! This kit uses a later Scalextric guide blade which is needed to maintain the right direction of travel on modern track obstacles.
No soldering is required as this kit simply fits into place with only basic tools. The original car body and motor are used with no changes at all, which means the original guide pin can be refitted at any time to return your Scalextric car to it’s original condition.
With this kit you can enjoy your original Scalextric Austin Healey 3000 and Scalextric Mercedes 190SL models on later Scalextric Classic track and even new Scalextric Sort track layouts.

Now available – pick up braids for new Scalextric Drift cars

The newer range of Scalextric drift cars use larger than normal guide blade that rotate through 360 degrees allowing the Scalextric car to rotate on the track also through 360 degrees.  This adds a great extra dimension to racing Scalextric cars.

In order to do this the Drift Scalextric cars use a unique and larger than normal guide blade which is fitted with longer than normal pick-up braids.  The pick-up braids and the woven metal wire that actually make electrical contact with the metal track conducting strips.
These pick-up braids for the Drift Scalextric cars are 42mm long and are not available from Scalextric as a spare part.  The standard shorter braids are but not the longer Drift car braids.
Scalextric Car Restorations have re-manufactured the 42mm long Scalextric Drift car braids allowing for a low cost solution to worn out pick-up braids.  Why Scalextric themselves haven’t done this, well, who knows.

Replacement of a damaged Scalextric round guide blade

	This Scalextric Subaru Impreza was in good overall condition except for a damaged round guide blade and a broken braid contact plate. The lights all worked as did the 4 wheel drive system.
From the underside of the Scalextric Subaru Impreza the damaged round guide blade and missing contact plate can be seen. The 4 wheel drive belt can also be seen on the left of the picture just on the inside of the wheel.
	With the body of the Scalextric Subaru Impreza removed the motor, lights PCB and guide fixing screw can all be seen. Also, the broken guide contact plate can be seen on the end of the wire.
Here the broken Scalextric guide blade contact plates have been removed. along with the broken Scalextric round guide blade. The wires have been prepared to solder to the replacement contact plates.
	The replacement contact plates for the round guide blade have been soldered to the original Scalextric wires. You can also see the replacement Scalextric C8420 round guide blade, braid disc, fixing screw and with this car a small spring that fits on the guide shaft.
The replacement contact plates have been fitted to the replacement Scalextric guide blade. These Scalextric Car Restorations replacement guide blade contact plates are stronger than the original Scalextric items as they are manufactured from thicker material.
	This is the inside of the repaired Scalextric Subaru Impreza. The replacement Scalextric C8420 round guide blade has been refitted with its spring and screw. The round braid plate has also been fitted. We took the opportunity to clean away all the fluff and dust that was inside too. Then a few drops of light lubricating oil and some grease on the gears. This Scalextric car is good to race once again.

New Scalextric cars and the guide blade contact failure

A growing problem with the newer Scalextric cars with the round guide blade is the connection between the contact piece and the motor wire breaking.  It also seems Scalextric know about this as they have used different techniques to make this connection since this round guide was introduced.

Initially the contact was a solder connection but this causes the wire to fracture adjacent to the solder joint.  This is caused by metal fatigue due to the constant movement of the joint and corrosion caused by the solder flux.
Then there was a phase of crimping the joint, which is technically the best way to make a joint of this type.  However, the crimping was not done properly so the wires would just pull out of the crimp.  Now there is a crimp and solder process, but soldering a crimp is difficult so the solder doesn’t always secure the joint properly and the wire just pulls out again.
The final problem we’ve seen is that the contact itself can snap between the crimp and the guide.  This is because the metal is too thin for the job, which might explain the failures of the crimp only jointing method.
We have available a replacement contacts that are made of thicker material with a solder tag to make the joint to the wire.  This is a direct replacement and upgraded part.  Also, available is a complete guide with wires already attached.

Choosing the right Scalextric pick-up pins

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s Scalextric cars used little metal pins to connect the pick-up brushes to the motor wires.  Originally the pick-up pins were brass in colour and had a diameter of 1.95mm.  Later on the pins were changed to a silver colour and the diameter was changed to 1.75mm.



The two pins are very similar to look at apart from the colour.  However, the modern service part for the 1.75mm pin is now a brass colour too.  So it’s now impossible to look at a pin and decide its diameter.  The only way to let them apart is to measure the diameter with a micrometer or try them in the guide.

The only really certain way to ensure a match is to replace the Scalextric guide and pins together as a complete guide assembly
